Libby Garry passed her PMP certification September 2007. It was a natural fit for her organizational skills. She was working in the Games R&D department at Aristocrat Technologies in the project office. Her position was an administrative support type of position. One of her co-workers was going for his PMP certification. In the course of conversations with him she discovered that she was already applying project management principles. Those conversations started her on the course of getting her certification.
Libby has been utilizing project management skills in her previous positions as well. She spent several years in the Technical Compliance Department coordinating submissions with various gaming regulators in North America. She worked with cross-functional teams to organize submissions of gaming software and hardware including new platform submissions. Scheduling, risk management and communications were all keys to achieving successful product approvals. Before working for Aristocrat she also applied, unconsciously, project management skills in the marketing center at a small fire damper manufacturing company. She was involved in producing and distributing sales and marketing materials from inception to mailing. The projects involved specific delivery dates and working with vendors to get the materials on time and within budget.
Libby has been applying her project management skills to activities outside her job function as well. Since becoming a PMP she has taken on the role of being a Blood Drive Coordinator for the Aristocrat production facility and main office. She has found the strong communication skills needed for a project manager are well suited to working with both the United Blood Services and the donors.
Outside of work she is an avid fencer at the local fencing salle, Red Rock Fencing Center. She uses her project management skills in several ways in her fencing. In 2009 she qualified to go to the fencing national championship. It was held in Dallas and she need to organize the trip and raise funds to be able to afford to go. She established a time line and developed a campaign to create interest and was able to raise funds for the trip. She is also very involved in organizing local fencing tournaments. There is a running joke at the center, that there is “Red Rock time”, which means it starts 15 to 30 minutes late and there’s “Libby time”, which means it starts on time.  Even more amusing is that everyone prefers “Libby time” because people show up on time and they get done on time.
Project management has become a big part of her life both in and out of work. It is not uncommon for her friends and associates to request her organizational skills. More than one friend has tapped her on the shoulder and claimed to need her as their “Project Manager”.
